How to use worksheets at home without making your child bored

Most children in India already spend long hours in school and tuition. So when we hand them one more sheet at home, the first reaction is often a groan. The good news is that a worksheet does not have to feel like homework. A few small habits make a big difference.

Keep it short

For Nursery and LKG, one sheet of 10 minutes is enough. UKG and Class 1 children can do 15 minutes. Class 3 to 5 can handle 20 to 25 minutes. Stop while your child is still enjoying it – they will be happy to do the next one tomorrow.

Pick a fixed time

Children like routine. Many parents find the best time is after the evening snack, before TV or phone time. Avoid right after school, when the child is tired and hungry.

Match the sheet to what the school is teaching

Look at your child's school diary or notebook. If the class is doing the matra of ‘aa’ (ा) in Hindi or the 2 times table in Maths, print a sheet on the same topic. Practising the same thing at home makes the child confident in class.

Let them correct their own mistakes

Instead of saying ‘wrong’, point to the line and ask, “Can you check this one again?” When the child finds the mistake, the learning stays longer.

Praise the effort

A star, a sticker or simply putting the sheet up on the fridge tells your child that their work matters. Say “You wrote so neatly today” rather than only “Good”.

Keep a file

Put finished sheets in a simple folder. After a month, look back together. Children love seeing how much their handwriting and speed have improved.
